Youth Sports Leaders

Bresee encourages students to maintain a healthy, active lifestyle through workshops, sports teams and leagues. Contact Athletics Coordinator Bobby Kelley with questions at bkelley@bresee.org.

WORKSHOPS

Bresee offers year-long, weekly workshops for students in Bresee’s Beyond the Bell middle school program. This includes soccer (four workshops weekly) and general sports, which rotates between basketball, flag football, tennis, and volleyball (two workshops weekly).

In addition to promoting an active lifestyle, workshops are designed to help youth gain a better understanding of their personal fitness levels, as well as ways that they can assess fitness independently. This is important in setting youth up for long-term health.

If the workshops are successful, Bresee hopes to achieve the following outcomes:

  • 1A: Youth will correctly identify appropriate methods for self-assessment of general fitness. Knowledge will be assessed through a pre- and post-test on general fitness knowledge.

  • 1B: Youth will show improved acceleration, agility, and core strength. Agility and acceleration will be assessed using pre- and post-test results for a 10-yard sprint and spider test, while core strength will be assessed by a timed plank, side-planks (left/right), and a prone double-leg raise.

TEAMS

Bresee runs middle and high school soccer leagues in the spring and fall seasons.

Bresee will consider these teams successful if:

  • 2A: Youth report that their reasons for registering for a team were fulfilled. Different players participate for different reasons (e.g. to make friends; to improve in the sport; to have a safe place to go after school). By asking youth to identify a personal goal at the start of the season, coaching them to progress during the season, and determining whether these goals have been met at the close of the program, Bresee can help ensure that youth feel ownership over their experiences.

  • 2B: Youth will report that the values of teamwork and good sportsmanship were clearly defined and well enforced.

  • 2C: Youth will improve acceleration, agility, and core strength. Agility and acceleration will be assessed using pre- and post-test results for a 10-yard sprint and spider test, while core strength will be assessed by a timed plank, side-planks (left/right), and a prone double-leg raise.

  • 2D: Youth will improve domain-specific foundational skills appropriate to their sport (e.g. number of free throws made; number of successful v-dribbles per minute, etc.). These will be measured through pre- and post-tests.

LEAGUES

Bresee runs multiple sports leagues each year, inviting external teams to enroll and participate in competitive play. Bresee will offer middle school boys’ and girls’ futsal leagues in fall, high school girls’ and boys’ soccer leagues in spring, and a co-ed basketball league in summer 2020.

Bresee will consider the leagues successful when:

  • 3A: Youth report that their reasons for registering for a team were fulfilled.

  • 3B: Youth will report satisfactory or outstanding experiences with the league on quality metrics (level of organization; quality of facilities and equipment; professionalism of referees; etc.)

  • 3C: Coaches will report satisfactory or outstanding experiences with the league on quality metrics (level of organization; clarity of league values and expectations; professionalism of referees; etc.)
