Collaborate

Bresee participates in several citywide collaborations and one-to-one agency relationships. Our goal is to increase our impact while benefitting from the experience and resources of those who share our interest in building the assets of our community. Bresee welcomes additional partnerships with likeminded organizations.

Majestic Realty Foundation: Los Angeles Youth Leadership Council

Majestic Realty Foundation hosts Bresee and five other local agencies—Red Shield/Salvation Army Los Angeles, Para Los Niños, El Centro del Pueblo, Salesian Boys & Girls Club and Heart of Los Angeles Youth—in a collaborative called the Los Angeles Youth Leadership Council (LAYLC). Together for five years, the group brings together 70 of their youth monthly for leadership development, goal-setting and community awareness activities. The agencies take what they learn from youth during these sessions to further develop their after-school programs. Majestic provides consultants and other resources in areas such as academic assistance, college preparation, and capacity building to tangibly assist agencies in serving youth.

Los Angeles Unified School District

Bresee is well known at the district level and we have built a rapport with educators at various Los Angeles Unified School District campuses over two decades. Our staff have been housed on the campuses of Foshay Learning Center, Berendo Middle School, and Manual Arts High School to replicate the HOSTS language arts tutoring program offered at our center. We’ve also collaborated with Belmont High on several college-readiness projects. One of our staff teaches filmmaking on their campus (more information follows). Subcontracting relationships—see ASES and LA Bridges below—also enhance Bresee’s ability to support students and educators.

After-School Education & Safety Program (ASES)

We partner with Virgil Middle School through LAUSD Beyond the Bell-ASES. This program supports Bresee’s ability to provide after-school enrichment activities and case management services for students.

LA Bridges

Bresee is a subcontractor for the LA Bridges network, serving Virgil Middle School students and their parents. The relationship increases our capacity for case managing youth identified as highly at-risk for joining gangs, and for providing safe passage services. Virgil teachers are welcomed to visit our center. Bresee staff regularly visit campus during lunch, attend orientations, and participate in parent-teacher conferences.

Family Development Network

Bresee subcontracts for the Family Development Network, which brings together diverse agencies to provide comprehensive services to residents. Bresee is supported to case manage parents and teach parenting classes, and benefits from a wide network of referral sources for our clients.

Workforce Investment Act

As a Workforce Investment Act subcontractor, Bresee provides out-of-school, older youth with workplace readiness workshops and paid internships with local employers. Regular collaborative meetings afford opportunities for sharing resources necessary for serving this highly at-risk population.

The Children’s Partnership

Bresee has provided The Children’s Partnership with direct access to clients and provided data for reports as TCP studies the digital divide. TCP brings legislators to Bresee to help them understand how community technology centers operate in the context of a larger organization. Bresee also partnered with the organization to create a short video that explains the mission of TCP.

Heart of Los Angeles Youth

In partnership with Heart of Los Angeles Youth—a nearby youth center—we co-founded the Central City Basketball Association in the early ‘90s. Today, Bresee participates in its basketball and soccer leagues, and we cross-refer clients better suited to the other’s organization. They remain an inspiration as we seek to fortify our arts-related components.

Lanterman Regional Center

Lanterman Regional Center is a leader in providing comprehensive services to people with development disabilities. Lanterman provides training for Bresee staff who are integrating its clients into our youth and adult technology classes. Bresee offered a digital storytelling class solely to eight Lanterman clients in April of 2007.

Camino Nuevo Charter School

Bresee supports Camino Nuevo’s film classes by training instructors, teaching their students Final Cut Pro editing software, sharing equipment, and holding documentary filmmaking workshops in the classroom.

Belmont High School Multimedia Academy

Bresee is on the advisory board of the Belmont Multimedia Academy. Our multimedia coordinator has taught classes there since Additional classes are planned in 2007.

HeArt Project Los Angeles

The HeArt Project, which connects alternative school with professional artists and cultural centers, holds their video production residency program at Bresee. It is taught by our multimedia coordinator

Echo Park Film Center

Bresee is on the board of directors of this local community media nonprofit and teaches monthly editing classes at their center.

Northeast Trees

Bresee has collaborated with Northeast Trees to produce an 18- minute video about the importance of the Los Angeles watershed. Northeast Trees is one of several nonprofits responsible for helping to restore the Los Angeles River.
