Delinquency Prevention and Intervention

Over 25% of Los Angeles' gang-related crimes occur within the three police divisions located in Bresee’s service area. Youth in our community are at high risk of victimization as a result.  Some join gangs in a misguided attempt to secure protection from violence while addressing their sense of powerlessness.  Through proven methodologies—including workshops, peer accountability and solid relationships with adult mentors—Bresee is making our community safer, one young person at a time,

Prevention

Through a partnership with the city’s LA Bridges program, Bresee is one of 100 community-based organizations serving 10- to 14-year-old youth who are highly at-risk for gang activity and their families.  We connect them to our safe after-school environment, provide intervention counseling and alternative activities, mitigate issues in collaboration with their teachers, and facilitate family participation in community-wide revitalization efforts, such as clean ups.  Youth who are not involved in Bridges are benefit from the methodologies and activities Bresee implements on a regular basis.

Intervention

Youth offenders—who have been referred to Bresee by LAPD through the city’s Youth Advocacy program—and their families find refuge and support at our community center.  Intensive case management, counseling, anger management workshops, peer accountability, and parenting classes are all part of the continuum of interventions that Bresee offers to prevent recidivism while encouraging goal-setting and positive choices.
