Career Development and Financial Literacy

Bresee's service area has an unemployment rate of 31%, in sharp contrast to the overall Los Angeles County rate of 8%. Under-the-table jobs, poor financial management, a lack of access to skills-building training, and other factors exacerbate generational poverty issues that result from underemployment.  Bresee's Career Development and Financial Literacy programs inspire hope for the future while instilling workplace readiness and money management skills.

Youth Programs  (11-18 years)

For several years, Bresee has collaborated with a banking professional to develop and implement a series of youth-friendly financial literacy workshops, offered after-school. Youth leaders assist in facilitating the workshops, and have even taken the show on the road, teaching teens at other youth centers.  The workshops are fully integrated with our Youth Banking System, which provides youth with practical, hands-on experience in saving, spending wisely and avoiding credit pitfalls.

Young Adult Programs (19-21 years)

Through our partnership with the Workforce Investment Act, Bresee instructs weekly workplace-readiness workshops in areas such as completing job applications, developing resumes, interviewing, and searching for jobs online.  Upon program graduation, participants qualify for a 200-hour internship, customized to address their career interests.   Assistance with obtaining unsubsidized employment is offered as well.

Adult Programs (16 years and over)

Adults can use our CyberCafé to search for jobs on line and develop resumes.  High-quality paper, copying and faxing services are available. Financial literacy workshops that cover topics such as banking skills and saving for an affordable home are offered.
