Serving our Community

The Bimini Slough Ecology Park was built to be enjoyed by all those living in the neighborhood near the Bresee Community Center. The park covers what was previously Second Street between South Bimini Place and Juanita Avenue (near the intersection of Vermont Avenue and Third Street). In this part of Los Angeles, parks are in short supply, and there are 1,000 residents for every one-third of an acre of green space. This park is Bresee Foundation's gift to our community, and we are proud to say "Welcome!". [top]

A place to play and relax

The park offers 20,000 square feet of open space. Playground equipment, including an elbow slide, climbing poles, and stone climbers, offers neighborhood children a much-needed place to play. Park benches and open space offer parents and others a place to relax in a healthy and natural setting. [top]

Creating a cleaner environment

This park addresses not only the need for green space, but also serves as a model for addressing key environmental issues. Years ago the Sacatella Creek flowed through here, but its waters were diverted decades ago as the city grew. However, this area remains a "slough" (pronounced "slew"), meaning that it is low land, i.e. a marsh area where runoff water from surrounding hills collects on a rainy day.

The park was designed to highlight this characteristic and incorporate into it several features beneficial to the environment. With assistance from the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power and the Metropolitan Water District, the park includes:

  1. A state-of-the-art drip irrigation system, which will minimize water usage.
  2. A selection of plants and trees native to the area which will provide color and require little water.
  3. A bio-filtration vegetated 180-foot swale (A "swale" is a low, often moist, place in a tract of land.)
Helped by its vegetation and trash interceptor, the swale will serve as a filter for storm water run-off and will eliminate toxins from the water before it flows out to the ocean. As a demonstration project, these aspects of the park will be monitored by The Bureau of Sanitation and other environmental groups to assess water flow and quality.
