Bresee Staff: Education and Career Development
Education & Career Development programs
provide youth with academic tutoring and homework assistance, job development
and college prep services during after-school hours. Both youth and
adults are offered computer access and training as well as arts and
multimedia production workshops in our 28-station CyberHood computer training center.
What I do:
As the Middle School Education Coordinator, I coordinate the HOSTS
(Help One Student To Succeed) mentoring program for the Language Arts
component. Students who need to strengthen their reading and writing
skills are paired up with mentors who work with them on a one-to-one
basis, for an hour every week. I also serve as a College Advisor for
high school students, providing information about scholarships, SAT
preparation classes, and college admission policies. I also help Seth
Eklund organize college campus tours.
Why I am here:
I joined Bresee as a volunteer mentor for the HOSTS Language Arts
program at the beginning of 2006. As a former Virgil Middle School
and Belmont High School (the majority of the students we serve attend
these schools) student, I wanted to serve as a role model for the
community’s youth. As a Bresee employee, I hope to motivate
and encourage students to go on to college. If I did it, so can they.
What I enjoy about what I do:
I am highly committed to education, and feel that it is a powerful
tool for social change. I enjoy my job precisely because I know that
it is impacting students’ education and lives in a very direct
way.
