Bresee Staff: Education and Career Development
Education & Career Development programs
provide youth with academic tutoring and homework assistance, job development
and college prep services during after-school hours. Both youth and
adults are offered computer access and training as well as arts and
multimedia production workshops in our 28-station CyberHood computer training center.
What I do:
My job at Bresee is to run NAP, which stands for the Neighborhood
Action Program. The program is designed to increase youth academics,
promote sports and social skills. I also provide a monthly report
of participating clients to the Community Development Department of
the City of Los Angeles. Among other things, I help to supervise the
youth center, build relationships with the youth and their families,
and refer them to our counseling and health programs. Throughout the
year, I also help with camps, transportation, outreach programs, and
lead extracurricular activities, such as sports and art.
Why I am here:
As a kid, I grew up attending Virgil Middle School. I lived in the
neighborhood as a teenager. I am a strong supporter of social justice
and reconciliation, and I see that Bresee is a place where it gets
done. To me, Bresee is a place where people in the community are empowered
to create a better place for their children.
What I enjoy about what I do:
Bresee gives me the opportunity to help immigrant youth by helping
them adapt to the language and culture in this community. It is an
opportunity to share my experiences, talents and love for the community.
The work I do at Bresee motivates me to take youth on trips to Yosemite
and New Orleans, which are a way to teach the students the value of
giving back to the community that they live in. I also enjoy what
I do because it gives me the opportunity to see lives changed by participating
in different activities, and the satisfaction of helping somebody
in need. In addition, I am able to express my faith and work with
a diverse group of people.
