Bresee Staff:
Education and Career Development

Education & Career Development programs provide youth with academic tutoring and homework assistance, job development and college prep services during after-school hours. Both youth and adults are offered computer access and training as well as arts and multimedia production workshops in our 28-station CyberHood computer training center.

What I do:
My work takes place in the Learning Center. I coordinate the Homework Lab and HOSTS Math Mentoring and Peer Mentoring programs. The goal of our programs is to assist our youth in achieving academic goals, thus building their self-esteem and motivating them to pursue higher education. Part of my job is to pair up volunteers with middle and high school students that are in need of individual attention for the purpose of increasing their grades in school and preparing them for standardized testing. For those students receiving tutoring, I prepare lesson plans based on their needs. I also coordinate interaction between volunteers and students in the Homework Lab.

Why I am here:
I stumbled upon Bresee four years ago when I was looking for access to the Internet. A friend had told me about Bresee and, out of need and curiosity, I checked out their CyberCafé. The moment I stepped foot in Bresee I felt a warm welcome. The staff was very helpful and attentive, and I was impressed with the amount of involvement with the youth. I immediately had a desire to be a part of the Bresee community. It was a match made in heaven!

What I enjoy about what I do:
I have a fantastic time hanging out with the youth because they bring out the inner child in me. It also makes me comfortable to know that the youth have access to a safe learning environment that they enjoy.
